Billions of people around the world tap into their laptops, smartphones and Wi-Fi enabled devices to access and communicate on the internet every day. There are more businesses than ever trading solely online, and, unless we’ve set our profiles to private, our whole lives can be scrutinised on social media.

It’s never been easier to gain instant access to information using search engines, so it should come as no surprise that more companies are prioritising internet security than ever before.

If you’re in the business of selling products or services online, safeguarding payment information and customer data should be of the utmost importance – not only because it’s your moral responsibility, but failing to do so can have devastating consequences on your business (both online and offline).

Recent high-profile data breaches and serious cyber threats have highlighted the problem of cybersecurity for many SMEs and large businesses worldwide. It was only a couple of months ago that one of Britain’s biggest mobile phone companies, Three, was sabotaged by a group of hackers, where they gained access to customers names, addresses, phone numbers and dates of birth.

Don’t Compromise Sensitive Data

A 2016 survey on cybercrime by PwC revealed that 32% of companies surveyed responded that they had been affected by cybercrime, while another 18% (rather worryingly) simply didn’t know. The key problem, it concluded, is ‘a general lack of preparedness’, with only 37% of respondents having a fully operational incident response plan.

In November, 2016, chancellor and MP, Philip Hammond, spoke about the launch of the National Cyber Security Strategy at the Future Decoded (Microsoft) conference in London; he said: “Trust in the internet and the infrastructure on which it relies is fundamental to our economic future. Because without that trust, faith in the whole digital edifice will fall away.”

If your company doesn’t have measures in place to protect customer data, it’s high time it did. A data breach of any kind can be incredibly damaging to your business’ reputation, and customer confidence in your company is likely to diminish should any information be lost.
